Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham box.
