Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
